Jevil is the chaotic, optional superboss hidden deep within the Dark World of DELTARUNE's first chapter. Beating him is one of the game's toughest challenges, but the rewards are well worth the effort. To face him, you must first embark on a scavenger hunt across the map to find three Broken Key pieces, have them reforged by a master smith, and then descend into the dungeons of Card Castle to unlock his cell. This fight can be won through either violence or pacifism, each yielding a different, powerful piece of equipment.
This guide will walk you through every step: locating all three key fragments, finding Jevil, and mastering the strategies required to defeat him, whether you choose to fight or pacify the cackling jester.
Where Do You Find the Three Broken Key Pieces?
The first major step is collecting the three scattered fragments of the Jail Key. They are hidden in separate areas of the Dark World, requiring a keen eye and a bit of puzzle-solving. You can collect them in any order, but this is the most common path.
Broken Key A: A Gift from Seam
This is the last piece you'll likely acquire, but it's the simplest to get. First, you must reach Card Castle and take the elevator down to the floor labeled '?????'. Here, you'll find a prison cell and can interact with the mysterious prisoner, Jevil. He will speak in riddles about chaos and freedom, tasking you with finding the key to his door.
Once you have spoken to him, travel back to the Fields of Hopes and Dreams using a warp door. Head left to find Seam's shop (pronounced 'Shawm'). Speak with Seam and choose the dialogue option about the 'strange prisoner'. Recognizing Jevil's description, Seam will tell you a bit of backstory about the court jester's descent into madness and hand over Broken Key A.
Broken Key B: A Chest in the Fields
This piece is found relatively early in the game. In the Fields of Hopes and Dreams, shortly after Ralsei teaches you about fighting and mercy, you'll enter a large, open area. Lancer will be visible in the lower part of the screen. Instead of following the main path to the right, head down and to the left.
You'll find a chest tucked away in this small alcove. Simply open it to receive Broken Key B. It's easy to miss if you're rushing through the area, so be sure to explore thoroughly before moving on to the Great Board.

Broken Key C: A Hidden Forest Path
The final piece, Broken Key C, is the most cleverly hidden. Progress through the game until you reach the Forest. You'll come to a room with a bake sale on the left and a path leading to the right, where you meet the smith, Malius. From this crossroads, instead of going right, head directly south.
You will enter a screen with Rabbick enemies. In the bottom-center of this area, there's an invisible passage through the trees. Walk down into the treeline to find a secret path that winds upwards into a secluded clearing. A chest sits at the end of this path containing Broken Key C. On your way back, you can also find a chest with a Revive Mint by taking a left fork in the hidden path.
How Do You Forge the Key and Find Jevil?
With all three Broken Key pieces in hand, your next stop is the smith. From the Forest bake sale, head to the right and you'll find Malius, who can repair broken items. Talk to him, and he will notice the three key fragments. He'll offer to fix them, and after a few satisfying clangs of his hammer, he will forge the complete Jail Key for you.
Now, you're ready to face Jevil. Return to Card Castle. The easiest way is to use the warp door to the Castle Town and then walk up into the castle entrance. Once inside, find the elevator on the first floor. Take it down to the basement level, marked as '?????'. Walk down the long staircase to the prison cell you found earlier. Use the Jail Key on the door, and prepare yourself. The world's easiest fight is about to begin... or is it?
Save your game at the save point just outside the door. This is your last chance before the battle begins.
Strategy 1: The Pacifist Route (Sparing Jevil)
If you want to win without violence, your goal is to tire Jevil out. This method is often considered more difficult due to the fight's length, but it yields what many players consider the superior reward. Your key ACT is Ralsei's Hypnosis, which costs 50% TP.
- Party Setup: Equip your most defensive gear. The White Ribbon on Ralsei is a good choice. Stock up on healing items, particularly Dark Burgers from Seam's shop. The Spincake is also an excellent reusable healing item.
- The Strategy: Your entire focus is on building TP and surviving. For the first several turns, have Kris and Susie Defend to gain TP while Ralsei heals. Grazing Jevil's projectiles also grants TP. Once Ralsei has at least 50% TP, use Hypnosis on Jevil. This will lower his attack power for the next turn and advance the 'tiredness' meter. Repeat this process about ten times.
- Key Attacks to Watch: Jevil's attacks are fast and chaotic. Watch for the carousel of spinning clubs and ducks, the bouncing scythes that form his 'Devilsknife', and the rain of spades. Stay moving and try to find safe spots in the patterns.

After enough uses of Hypnosis, a message will appear stating that 'Jevil is tired!'. At this point, you can use Kris's ACT, Pacify, to end the fight peacefully. Jevil will commend your persistence and give you his armor, the Jevilstail.
Strategy 2: The Violent Route (Fighting Jevil)
If you prefer a more direct approach, you can defeat Jevil by reducing his HP to zero. This path is often faster but requires aggressive offense while still dodging his relentless attacks.
- Party Setup: Equip your highest-attack gear. Give Susie the Brave Axe if you have it. The goal is to maximize damage output. Ralsei will still be your primary healer.
- The Strategy: Your main damage source will be Susie's Rude Buster ACT, which costs 50% TP. Use Kris's Fight command and Defend to build TP. Have Ralsei focus on healing the party, only attacking when everyone is at full health. Whenever Susie has enough TP, unleash Rude Buster. Don't be afraid to use healing items liberally; this is not a fight to be stingy.
- Surviving the Chaos: The attack patterns are the same as the pacifist route. The key difference is that you must create openings to attack. The best time is often right after a major attack pattern concludes. Keep your HP high, as many of his attacks can wipe out a character in one or two hits if you're not careful.
Once you deplete his health bar, Jevil will be defeated. He will be impressed by your strength and grant you his weapon, the Devilsknife.
What Are the Rewards for Beating Jevil?
Your reward depends entirely on how you finished the fight. Both items are powerful, but they serve different purposes.

- Jevilstail (Pacifist Reward): This is an armor piece that can be equipped by any party member. It provides +2 Attack, +2 Defense, and +2 Magic. Its versatility and balanced stat boosts make it arguably the best armor in Chapter 1 and a fantastic piece of equipment to carry forward.
- Devilsknife (Violent Reward): This is a weapon for Susie. It provides a massive +5 Attack and +4 Magic, and it also lowers the TP cost of Rude Buster. While incredibly powerful, it locks Susie out of equipping other axes and means you miss out on the defensive utility of the Jevilstail.
For most playthroughs, especially a first-time run, the Jevilstail is the recommended reward due to its flexibility and excellent defensive stats that benefit the whole party's survivability.
The Final Word
Defeating Jevil is a true test of skill in DELTARUNE, a chaotic dance that pushes your dodging and resource management to their limits. Whether you choose to pacify the jester or beat him at his own game, overcoming this challenge is one of the most satisfying moments in the game and nets you some of the best gear available. So gather those keys, steel your nerves, and get ready for chaos, chaos, chaos!
