The Oddities system in Where Winds Meet is one of the most crucial, yet easily missed, paths to permanent power for your character. It’s not about gear; it’s about turning the strange items you find—enchanted lotuses, iron wing mantises, chirping crickets—into permanent stat boosts. Engaging with this system early and consistently provides a massive advantage, unlocking everything from bonus health and endurance to a special item that weakens every boss in the starting region.
There are two Oddity vendors in the game. The first, in the King zone, is available almost immediately. The second, in Kyang, requires you to complete a short side quest to unlock him. Your main strategy for both should be to follow the shortest path to the end of their respective upgrade trees to unlock the most powerful nodes quickly.
What Are Oddities and How Do You Find Them?
Oddities are collectible items you earn by solving miniature world puzzles. As you explore, you'll constantly see small butterfly icons on your compass and mini-map. These markers lead you to an interactive point in the world that triggers a simple challenge. In the Kyang zone, for example, you might have to shoot a bird that drops an 'Art Soothe Twig', or chase and jump through a series of purple energy balls.
These puzzles are everywhere and are designed to be quick, rewarding activities as you travel. Completing one grants you a small amount of zone exploration XP (typically 3-5 XP) and, most importantly, one or more Oddity items specific to that region. These are the currency you'll turn in for upgrades. The items themselves are varied, from Whisper Hives and Dagger General crickets to Enchanted Lotuses. Don't worry about what each one does individually; they all feed into the same vendor system.
Where Are the Oddity Vendors?
Each of the first two major zones, King and Kyang, has its own dedicated Oddity vendor with a unique upgrade tree. You'll need to unlock them separately.
The King Zone Vendor: Chiang
The first vendor is available very early in your adventure. Shortly after you begin, you'll head up a road and discover a small camp at a crossroads. Here you'll find an NPC named Chiang. He gives you an initial quest to retrieve a Whisper Hive by shooting a beehive out of a nearby tree with a fire arrow.
Once you return the hive to him, he becomes the permanent Oddity vendor for the King region. You can return to him anytime you've collected more local Oddities to submit them and purchase nodes on his upgrade tree. He's easy to find and should be a regular stop during your first 20 hours of gameplay.

The Kyang Zone Vendor: Unlocking the Second Master
The second vendor, for the northwestern Kyang region, isn't immediately available. You must first unlock him through a hidden quest. This area is intended for later in your journey, so don't rush here until the main story guides you.
When you first enter the Kyang zone, make your way to the main Wayfarer landmark to reveal the map. As you explore the area just northwest of this Wayfarer, a green book icon will appear on your map, signaling a new quest. Interact with the person there to begin a short mission. Upon its completion, the quest-giver will dramatically leap into the sky and fly away, relocating to their permanent spot where they will serve as the Kyang Oddity vendor. From then on, you can visit them to exchange Oddities found throughout the Kyang region.

How to Spend Your Oddities: The Best Upgrade Path
Both vendors present you with a large, branching tree of unlockable nodes. While it might be tempting to grab every nearby stat boost, the most efficient strategy is to push forward toward the biggest rewards at the end of the main path.
Prioritize the Path to the Right
When you open the exchange menu, you'll see a starting node and several branching paths. My recommendation is to always follow the shortest, most direct line to the right side of the screen. This approach ensures you're always unlocking the major nodes that offer the most significant stat increases—like Max Vitality +10 or Max Endurance +5—or unique quest items. These are far more valuable than the smaller, incremental boosts on the side paths.
Once you reach a point where the next major node is locked behind a character level requirement you haven't met yet (for example, a node requiring level 56), then it's time to backtrack. Go back and spend your accumulated Oddities on the smaller nodes you skipped. This is the perfect time to pick up boosts like '+2 Physical Defense', 'Damage versus Monsters', or extra HP.

The King Vendor's Secret Weapon: The Chime Bell Fragment
The single most important reward from the King vendor's tree is the 'Chime Bell Fragment'. You acquire this by following the main path toward the end of the tree. This isn't just a stat item; it's a key to a powerful zone-wide buff.
Once you have the fragment, travel to the Moonville Peak landmark teleport point. Ascend to the top of the main building there, and you'll find a large, silent bell. Interact with it to insert the fragment. After doing so, strike the bell. It will send out a massive shockwave across the entire King region. From that moment on, every single boss in the zone becomes permanently weaker, making them significantly easier to defeat and farm for rewards. This is an incredible advantage and should be your primary goal when spending Oddities in King.
The Final Word
Don't let the sheer number of systems in Where Winds Meet overwhelm you. The Oddities system is a simple, rewarding loop: see a butterfly icon, solve a quick puzzle, and turn in the resulting items for permanent, meaningful upgrades. By focusing on unlocking both vendors and strategically pushing for the 'Chime Bell Fragment' early on, you'll build a powerful foundation for your character that gear alone can't provide.
