Your character’s power in Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon isn’t just about the gear you find. It’s a three-part system: actively spending points at a bonfire to shape your build, passively improving skills just by performing actions, and meeting attribute thresholds to wield the best equipment. Mastering this loop is the key to surviving the encroaching Wyrdness.
Every level you gain grants you one Attribute Point and one Skill Point to spend at a bonfire. Attributes like Strength and Spirituality unlock gear and raise core stats, while Skill Points unlock active and passive abilities in six specialized trees. At the same time, simply using a bow, sprinting, or brewing potions will naturally increase your proficiency in those areas over time. If you make a mistake, you can reset your build completely by drinking a rare Origin Potion.
The Bonfire Ritual: How to Level Up
Progression in Tainted Grail is anchored to the classic bonfire system, but with its own unique spin. As you defeat enemies and complete quests, you’ll earn experience points (XP), filling the meter in the top right of your screen. When it fills, you’ll gain a level and see a ‘Points available’ notification. This is your cue to rest.
You can’t spend these points on the fly. You must first find a safe spot and place a bonfire. On PC, hold down ‘Q’ to bring up the radial menu and select the bonfire icon. Once it’s placed, interact with it and choose the ‘Level Up’ option. This is the only way to access the character advancement screen where you can invest your hard-earned points.
Each level-up provides a consistent reward: one point for your attributes and one point for your skills. This forces a constant decision: do you invest in the raw power of your core stats or unlock a new combat technique?
Spending Your Points: Attributes vs. Skills
Once you’re at the bonfire menu, you’re faced with the core decision of your build. Your points are split between two distinct but interconnected systems: the six foundational Attributes and the sprawling Skill Trees associated with them.
Decoding the Six Attributes
Attributes are your character’s bedrock. Investing a point here provides immediate, tangible benefits to your core statistics, but more importantly, they act as gatekeepers for equipment. That powerful two-handed sword or set of mage robes is useless if you don’t meet its Strength or Spirituality requirement. When you invest a point, you’re not just getting stronger; you’re unlocking future possibilities.
The six attributes are:
- Strength: Increases melee damage, maximum stamina, and reduces the weight penalty from armor.
- Dexterity: The core attribute for archers and rogue-like builds.
- Endurance: Boosts your health, encumbrance limit, and proficiency with different armor weights.
- Perception: Primarily increases your critical hit chance.
- Spirituality: The main attribute for casters, increasing spell power, maximum mana, and mana regeneration.
- Practicality: A utility-focused attribute that governs your crafting and trading effectiveness.
Don’t neglect these. An attribute point can mean the difference between getting a 4.5 armor rating from a 9-point chest piece and getting the full benefit. They can also open up unique dialogue options in conversations, allowing you to use your brawn or insight to change the outcome of a quest.

Navigating the Skill Trees
Your second point per level goes into one of six skill trees, each corresponding to one of the main attributes. This is where you truly define your playstyle, moving beyond raw stats to acquire new abilities and powerful passive bonuses.
These trees branch into specializations. The Strength tree, for example, contains a path for ‘Two-Handed’ weapons, but also a ‘General’ path that offers a flat 10% boost to all melee damage—perfect for a hybrid build or a player who hasn’t settled on a weapon yet. It pays to read ahead.
Some nodes offer more than just a simple percentage increase. Digging into the trees can reveal game-changing abilities:
- In the Dexterity tree, a node in the ‘Movement’ branch grants an additional long dash, a massive mobility boost regardless of your armor weight.
- In the Spirituality tree, the ‘All-Mother’s Blessing’ under the Healing branch gives you a random statistical buff every time you rest.
- The Practicality tree has an entire section dedicated to crafting and trading, with the first node increasing the gold you receive from selling items—a must-have for aspiring merchants.
You Are What You Do: Understanding Passive Progression
Beyond the points you spend at a bonfire, your character is constantly evolving based on your actions. Tainted Grail features a robust passive progression system where skills improve simply through use. You can track these advancements by navigating to the ‘Character’ menu and then selecting ‘Status’.
This system rewards dedication to a playstyle and makes every action in the world feel meaningful. The more you engage with a specific mechanic, the better you become at it, completely independent of your main level.

Here are a few examples of this in action:
- Combat Skills: Consistently using one-handed weapons will level up your ‘One-Handed’ skill, granting a passive damage increase with all weapons of that type.
- Utility Skills: The more locks you pick, the higher your ‘Theft’ skill becomes, making future lockpicking attempts easier.
- Crafting Skills: The more you use an alchemy bench, the more potent your created potions will be.
- Exploration Skills: Even sprinting and swimming contribute to your ‘Athletics’ skill, which in turn increases your sprint and swim speed over time.
This organic growth means your character is always getting stronger, even when you’re just exploring the world between major quests. It creates a satisfying feedback loop where your actions, not just your level, define your character’s capabilities.
How to Reset Your Build: Finding and Using an Origin Potion
What if you invest heavily in a two-handed build only to find a legendary bow you desperately want to use? Don’t worry, your choices aren’t permanent. You can respec your character by consuming a rare and valuable item: the Origin Potion.
Drinking one of these potions instantly refunds all the Attribute and Skill points you have ever spent. The next time you sit at a bonfire, you’ll be able to re-allocate every single point from scratch. It’s a clean slate. Note, however, that this does not reset your passive skills—the progress you made by using weapons or crafting is permanent.
These potions are hidden throughout the world, rewarding thorough explorers. While some vendors may occasionally sell them, you can find several for free. For an easy one early in the game:
- Start from the main keep in the Horns of the South.
- Head directly west, towards the cliffs overlooking the ocean.
- Carefully find a path down the cliff face. You can also approach from the beach by going behind the keep and looking for a rock overhang.
- Tucked against the cliff in this area is a small chest. Inside, you’ll find your first Origin Potion.
Another can be found in a jail cell in the starting asylum, directly across from where you find Brother Cassian.
