The humble bonfire in Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is your single most important survival tool. More than just a place to level up, it’s a portable hub that, when properly fueled, allows you to identify powerful items, fast travel from the deepest wilderness, restore your unique soul powers, and even practice alchemy on the go. Mastering its functions, especially those unlocked with Ethereal Cobwebs, is essential for surviving the encroaching Wyrdness.
What Are the Bonfire’s Basic Functions?
Even without any special fuel, the bonfire you can place from your radial menu (hold Q on PC) is a sanctuary. It provides three core functions that you'll use constantly from the moment you wash ashore.
Leveling Up Your Character
After accumulating enough XP from combat and quests, a 'Points Available' notification will appear. You cannot spend these points on the fly. You must first set down a bonfire and select the 'Level Up' option. This is the only way to access the menu where you can invest your attribute points (Strength, Endurance, etc.) and skill points into the game's six sprawling skill trees. Each level up grants you one attribute point and one skill point, making the bonfire the gateway to character progression.
Resting to Heal and Pass Time
Selecting 'Rest' at a bonfire will fully replenish your health and pass time. This is a critical feature, especially early on. The nights in Avalon are significantly more dangerous, with tougher enemies and the oppressive 'Wyrdness' making exploration treacherous. If you find yourself caught in the dark, you can simply place a bonfire and rest until morning to continue your journey in relative safety. It’s also a useful way to despawn any of your summoned companions if they happen to get stuck in the environment.
Cooking and Basic Crafting
Every bonfire acts as a cooking station. Here, you can use the ingredients you’ve scavenged to cook meals that provide valuable health-over-time effects. Food is your primary means of healing outside of combat, saving your precious potions for emergencies. You can experiment with ingredients or use recipes you've found to create potent stews and other dishes. This basic function ensures you can always turn foraged meat and vegetables into life-saving consumables, no matter how far you are from a settlement.
How to Unlock Advanced Functions with Cobwebs
The bonfire's true potential is unlocked when you fuel it with a special resource: Ethereal Cobwebs. These are often dropped by enemies at night or found in shimmering deposits throughout the world. By selecting the 'Fuel the Fire' option and spending 10 cobwebs, you transform your simple campfire into a mystical conduit, opening up four powerful new abilities for the duration of that fire.

Identify Mysterious Items
As you explore dungeons and defeat powerful foes, you’ll find gear and artifacts marked with a question mark. These 'unidentified items' are useless until you reveal their properties. By fueling a bonfire, you gain the ability to identify them. Each item requires a certain number of Ethereal Cobwebs to identify—typically between three and five, but sometimes more for rarer finds. This is your main method for acquiring a random but often powerful assortment of new weapons, armor, accessories, and rare crafting materials. It pays to save up a collection of unidentified items and identify them all in one go at a single fueled fire.

Fast Travel From Anywhere
While Avalon has fixed fast travel points (glowing stones) you can discover on the map, a fueled bonfire gives you the power to travel to any of them from your current location. This is an incredible utility, allowing you to escape a dangerous area, return to a town to sell loot without a long trek back, or simply move across the map efficiently. Instead of having to fight your way back to a fast travel stone, you can place your bonfire, fuel it with cobwebs, and be back at the Keep in seconds. This turns the bonfire into a personal, on-demand fast travel point.

Restore Your 'Weird Soul Power'
Early in the prologue, you gain a powerful ability tied to King Arthur's soul—a 'weirdness power' that can turn the tide of a difficult fight, often manifesting as a slow-motion effect. This ability is a single-use power that only recharges after a long rest or, more conveniently, at a fueled bonfire. For the cost of 10 Ethereal Cobwebs, you can select 'Restore Weird Soul Power' to immediately get another charge. This is invaluable when facing a boss or a series of tough encounters back-to-back, allowing you to use your ultimate ability more than once before returning to a safe location.
Unlock Alchemy Crafting
Fueling the fire with cobwebs also adds the 'Alchemy' option to your bonfire's menu. This allows you to brew potions and other concoctions just as you would at a dedicated alchemy bench in town. Given how quickly you can burn through health potions, the ability to craft more in the field is a massive advantage. As long as you have the ingredients and a supply of cobwebs, you never have to worry about running out of essential potions during a long expedition.
What Other Interactions Does the Bonfire Have?
Beyond its mechanical uses, the bonfire serves one other important narrative function. Occasionally, after significant story events or conversations, King Arthur's spirit will appear beside you when you set a bonfire. When he is present, a 'Talk' option will be available. It's always worth selecting this. He offers unique commentary, lore, and insight into the events unfolding around you. Ignoring these conversations means missing out on a significant layer of the game's rich, dark narrative.
Your Portable Base of Operations
The bonfire is far more than a simple checkpoint. It is your workshop, your sanctuary, and your magical beacon. Whether you're leveling up after a tough fight, escaping the horrors of the night, or using ethereal magic to travel the world, it is the central pillar of your survival in the grim lands of Avalon. Keep a healthy supply of Ethereal Cobwebs, and you'll always have a powerful lifeline at your fingertips.
