Night City runs on two currencies: eddies and reputation. While you’re grinding for the first, the game is quietly tracking the second through two distinct progression systems: your character Level and your Street Cred (SC). They are not the same. Your Level governs your raw power and personal abilities, unlocking the core skills that define your build. Street Cred, on the other hand, is your public-facing legend. It’s how the city perceives you, and a high SC opens doors that a high level alone can’t budge, unlocking better gear from vendors, juicier gigs from fixers, and even discounts on your purchases. Mastering both is the key to owning the streets.
So, What's the Real Difference?
Think of it as your internal power versus your external influence. One makes you a better killer, hacker, or ghost; the other makes Night City sit up and take notice. Both have separate XP bars and are generally raised by different, though sometimes overlapping, activities.
Character Level: Forging Your V
This is your traditional RPG leveling system. Every time you fill the XP bar, your character gains a level. Each level-up grants you two things:
- 1 Attribute Point: This is for your five core attributes: Body, Reflexes, Technical Ability, Intelligence, and Cool. Pumping points into these stats is the only way to unlock higher-tier perks and fundamentally shapes your character's capabilities. For example, investing in Body increases your max health, while Intelligence boosts your max RAM for hacking.
- 1 Perk Point: These are spent within the skill trees of your chosen attributes to unlock specific abilities, like being able to deflect bullets with a blade (Reflexes) or unlocking new cyberware slots (Technical Ability).
Your character level is a direct measure of your personal growth and combat potential. It determines how tough you are and what skills you can bring to a fight. With the Phantom Liberty expansion, the level cap is 60, giving you plenty of room to craft a specialized build.
Street Cred: Building Your Legend
Street Cred is your reputation. It’s a measure of how much of a somebody you are in the criminal underworld of Night City. While it doesn't directly increase your health or damage, its impact is just as crucial. A higher Street Cred rating makes the city's various players—fixers, vendors, ripperdocs—take you more seriously. The benefits are almost entirely transactional and opportunity-based. You're not getting stronger, you're getting access.
These are two separate systems with different XP bars. You can see them both in the 'Stats' screen of your menu. It's common for one to outpace the other depending on your playstyle. You might be a Level 20 powerhouse who’s a relative unknown (low SC), or a Level 10 merc who’s already the talk of the town (high SC).
How Do I Raise My Character Level?
Leveling V is straightforward: you get experience points (XP) for doing just about anything that involves progressing your story or engaging in combat. The most significant chunks of XP come from completing quests.
- Main Jobs, Side Jobs, and Gigs: These are your bread and butter for leveling. Following the main story and taking on the jobs offered by fixers are the fastest ways to accumulate large amounts of XP.
- Neutralizing Enemies: Every gonk you flatline gives you a small amount of XP. While it adds up, it's far less efficient than completing structured missions.
It’s important not to confuse your main character Level with the five individual 'Skill Progressions' (Headhunter, Netrunner, Shinobi, Solo, Engineer). These level up passively as you perform related actions—getting headshots levels up Headhunter, using quickhacks levels up Netrunner, and so on. Sleeping in your apartment provides a temporary XP buff, but be warned: this bonus only applies to these passive Skill Progressions, not your main character Level or your Street Cred.

How Do I Max Out My Street Cred?
Earning Street Cred is all about being seen doing mercenary work. You don't get SC for just exploring; you get it for completing jobs and taking down wanted criminals. If you want to become a legend, you need to get your hands dirty out on the streets.
- NCPD Scanner Hustles: This is the single most effective way to grind Street Cred. These are the small, blue icons that pepper your map—Assault in Progress, Reported Crime, etc. They are quick, numerous, and almost always involve taking out a group of wanted thugs. Before engaging, use your scanner on the enemies. You’ll often see a 'Bounty' on them, which lists a specific Street Cred reward for taking them out, like a 'Street Cred reward of 20' or 'Street Cred of 30'. Clearing the entire hustle and looting the evidence container at the end often provides an additional SC bonus.
- Gigs and Side Jobs: While these also award main level XP, they are a primary source of Street Cred. Fixers pay you in eddies, but completing their work successfully is what builds your name.
- Wearing Specific Clothing: Some pieces of clothing offer a small percentage bonus to Street Cred earned. It's not a game-changer, but if you're focused on grinding SC, it's worth equipping them.
Simply put, if you want to raise your character level, follow the story. If you want to raise your Street Cred, clean up the streets by chasing down every blue icon on your map.
What Exactly Does Street Cred Unlock?
This is where your reputation pays dividends. A high Street Cred score transforms your experience in Night City, turning you from a bottom-feeder into a valued client. The rewards fall into four main categories.

Better Gear at Vendors
This is the most critical benefit. Vendors—from gun shops to ripperdocs—have hidden inventory tiers that are locked behind Street Cred levels. You might visit a ripperdoc at SC 10 and see only a basic selection of cyberware. Return to that same ripperdoc at SC 40, and they'll suddenly have iconic, Tier 5+ cyberware that you never knew existed. The same goes for weapons, mods, and quickhacks. If you want the best gear in the game, you must raise your Street Cred.
Vendor Discounts
As your reputation grows, vendors respect you more—and that respect translates into lower prices. As you hit different SC tiers (roughly every 5-10 levels), you'll notice a permanent discount applied to all purchases at all vendors. It starts small, but at higher SC levels, the savings on expensive cyberware and iconic weapons become substantial.

New Gigs and Vehicles
Fixers aren't going to trust a nobody with their highest-stakes jobs. As your Street Cred increases, you'll get calls for new, more complex, and more lucrative gigs that were previously unavailable. Similarly, the selection of cars available for purchase through your apartment computer expands with your Street Cred. That slick supercar you've been eyeing won't even be listed until you've made a name for yourself.
Cosmetic Unlocks
While most benefits are gameplay-related, a higher Street Cred also unlocks new tattoo options at ripperdocs, allowing you to further customize V's appearance to reflect their legendary status.
The Final Take
Don't make the mistake of focusing on one progression system at the expense of the other. A high-level V with low Street Cred is a powerhouse who can't buy the best toys. A high-SC V with a low character level is a well-known merc who's too weak to handle the jobs their reputation earns them. Pay attention to both XP bars. Complete main and side quests to build your core strength, but take the time to patrol the streets and clear out those NCPD hustles. A true legend of Night City isn't just strong—they're respected. And on these streets, respect is everything.
