Battlefield 6 throws you into a sandbox of all-out warfare, but not all battles are created equal. The game's strength lies in its diverse suite of multiplayer modes, catering to different playstyles, team sizes, and strategic appetites. Whether you crave the chaos of 64-player combined-arms assaults or the focused intensity of tight, infantry-only skirmishes, there's a mode built for you. Understanding the unique objectives of Conquest, Breakthrough, Rush, Escalation, Domination, King of the Hill, Squad's Deathmatch, and Team Deathmatch is the first step to dominating the server.
What Are the Large-Scale Warfare Modes?
These are the signature, massive-scale experiences that define the Battlefield franchise. Expect huge maps, a full complement of land and air vehicles, and large player counts where squad coordination is paramount to securing victory.
Conquest
Conquest is the quintessential Battlefield mode, the bread and butter of the series. Two teams of up to 32 players each spawn on a sprawling map with the goal of bleeding the enemy's ticket count to zero. Each team starts with 1,000 tickets, which essentially represent their pool of respawns. The primary way to drain enemy tickets is by capturing and holding a majority of the flags scattered across the map. The more flags your team controls, the faster the enemy's score depletes. Every time a player on the opposing team respawns, they also subtract one ticket from their team's total. This creates a constant tug-of-war, where controlling territory is just as important as winning gunfights. Victory is achieved when one team's ticket count hits zero.

Breakthrough
Another series classic, Breakthrough channels the chaos of a large-scale battle into a focused, frontline assault. The mode splits players into two distinct roles: Attackers and Defenders. The map is divided into a series of sectors, each containing one or two objectives. The Attacking team must capture all objectives in a sector to push the front line forward and unlock the next one. The Defenders, with a limited number of respawns, must hold their ground and prevent the Attackers from advancing. It’s a linear, high-pressure mode that creates dramatic chokepoints and cinematic charges as the Attackers push relentlessly toward the final sector.
Escalation
A fresh take on the Conquest formula, Escalation is a multi-stage battle that grows more intense as the match progresses. The game begins with a total of seven capture points on the map. To score, a team must hold a majority of these points, which fills up a scoring meter. Once the meter is full, that team scores one point, and the first team to score three points wins the match. Here's the twist: after each point is scored, one of the capture points is permanently removed from the map. This systematically shrinks the playable area, forcing teams into closer and more desperate engagements as the match nears its conclusion.
What About Infantry-Focused Fights?
If you prefer to leave the tanks and jets behind for pure, on-the-ground gunplay, these smaller-scale modes are your destination. They feature condensed maps, no vehicles, and faster-paced action.

Domination
For veterans of other first-person shooters, Domination will feel immediately familiar. It’s a scaled-down version of Conquest, focusing on rapid flag captures and constant infantry combat. Two teams of eight players fight for control of three flags on a compact section of a larger map. Instead of bleeding tickets, teams earn points by holding these flags. The first team to reach the score limit of 200 points wins. With immediate respawns and no vehicles to worry about, Domination is all about map control, quick reflexes, and relentless pressure.
King of the Hill
King of the Hill is a classic objective mode that forces constant movement and adaptation. Two teams of eight battle to control a single, rotating capture point. This 'hill' appears in a set location on the map, and teams score points for as long as they occupy it. After one minute, the capture point relocates to a new position, forcing both teams to immediately shift their focus and fight for control of the new zone. It’s a frantic mode that rewards teams who can quickly rotate, set up defenses, and break enemy holds.
Are There Any Objective-Based Attack/Defend Modes?
Beyond the territorial control of Breakthrough, Battlefield 6 offers another classic mode centered on a direct, destructive objective for attackers.
Rush
Rush brings back the beloved attacker-versus-defender dynamic with a focus on destroying key military objectives. The attacking team's goal is to advance through the map by planting explosives on a pair of M-COM stations in each sector. The defending team must prevent these objectives from being armed and destroyed. If the attackers succeed, the defenders fall back to the next sector, and the fight continues. The match is played in rounds, with teams switching roles. The team that wins the most rounds by either successfully destroying all objectives or defending them until the attackers' tickets run out is declared the overall victor.

What if I Just Want to Rack Up Kills?
Sometimes you just want to skip the complex objectives and prove your team's superiority through pure firepower. These modes are stripped-down, kill-focused arenas.
Team Deathmatch
The most straightforward mode in any shooter. Two teams of eight players face off with one simple goal: be the first to reach the target kill count of 100. There are no flags to capture or objectives to destroy. It's a pure test of gun skill, teamwork, and map awareness on smaller, infantry-only maps. Spawns are fast, and the action is nonstop, making it a perfect mode for warming up or simply enjoying the core combat mechanics.
Squad's Deathmatch
This mode puts a unique Battlefield spin on the classic deathmatch formula. Instead of two large teams, the match features four separate squads of four players each, all competing against one another. The objective is to be the first squad to achieve 50 kills. This free-for-all dynamic creates a chaotic and unpredictable battlefield where you have to watch your back for enemies from three other teams. Like Team Deathmatch, it is infantry-only and features no respawn delay, keeping you constantly in the fight.
A Mode for Every Soldier
From the strategic, long-game warfare of Conquest and Escalation to the lightning-fast skirmishes of Domination and Team Deathmatch, Battlefield 6 ensures every player can find their niche. The best approach is to experiment. Jump into a Breakthrough match to feel the thrill of a coordinated charge, then switch to King of the Hill for a dose of chaotic fun. Mastering the flow of each mode is key to becoming a truly versatile and valuable soldier on the battlefield.
